Effective Surgical Treatment for GERD
Temecula Valley Hospital offers the LINX® Reflux Management System as an effective surgical treatment for certain individuals who suffer from Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). The LINX Reflux Management System is an implantable device that strengthens a weak lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and restores the sphincter competence, preventing stomach acid from escaping into the esophagus.
GERD is a very prevalent gastrointestinal disease in the United States, and one of the most serious in terms of its frequency, overall costs, adverse impact on quality of life, and potential for complications, such as Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal adenocarcinoma. Alleviating the symptoms of GERD is not enough to stop its progression. Preventing stomach acid from escaping into the esophagus must be central to the treatment of GERD.
How LINX Works
The LINX Reflux Management System is an implantable device consisting of a series of titanium beads, each containing a magnetic core connected together with independent titanium wires that allow expansion of the device. The device is placed around the lower esophagus just above the stomach. The magnetic beads constrict to prevent acid from escaping out of the stomach while allowing the patient to eat and swallow normally.
The procedure is done laparoscopically using a camera and tools that are placed through several small incisions, which minimize the recovery time and risks to the patient. The procedure generally lasts between 30-45 minutes and patients can often resume a normal diet that same night.
Key Benefits of LINX
LINX has several key advantages over the nissen fundoplication procedure. The LINX Reflux Management System:
- Can be reproduced
- Is fundic-sparing
- Preserves the ability to belch and vomit
- Can be removed
- Preserves future treatment options
